BERYLLIUM

Also known as: Be · Beryllium Test · Industrial Beryllium · Berylliosis Marker

Sample: Serum / Whole Blood Reference price: ₹1000Code: ZNT-BERYLLIUM

What this test measures

Beryllium testing measures beryllium concentration in blood or urine by ICP-MS. Beryllium is a lightweight, stiff metal used in aerospace components, copper-beryllium alloys for electronics and tooling, ceramics, dental prostheses, and nuclear applications. Inhaled beryllium particles cause sensitisation in genetically susceptible individuals; ongoing exposure progresses to chronic beryllium disease (CBD) — a granulomatous lung disease similar to sarcoidosis.

For diagnosing chronic beryllium disease, the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT) is the standard immunological test (measures T-cell sensitisation to beryllium). Blood / urine beryllium levels show recent exposure but do not diagnose CBD.

Why it matters

Indian industries using beryllium include aerospace component manufacture, copper-beryllium alloy work (tools, springs, connectors), nuclear reactors, dental alloy fabrication and certain ceramics. Workers face inhalation exposure during machining, grinding and polishing. Beryllium is classified as a known human carcinogen (lung) and chronic exposure causes potentially fatal chronic beryllium disease.

This test is appropriate for occupational surveillance in beryllium industries (with BeLPT being the more clinically meaningful immunological test where available), and to evaluate exposure after suspected incidents. It is not appropriate as a routine wellness test.

How to prepare

Use trace-element-free royal blue-top blood tube or trace-metal-free urine container. Stop multivitamins for 72 hours. For occupational testing, sample at end of shift / end of workweek. Mention occupational history including dental alloy work, copper-beryllium alloys or aerospace machining.

Markers & reference ranges

Reference ranges below are typical adult values. Your lab's reported range may differ slightly based on the assay platform and patient demographics — always read your report against the range printed on it.

MarkerNormal rangeIf lowIf high
Beryllium (µg/L)[1][2][3]Whole blood: < 1 µg/L · Urine: < 1 µg/g creatinineBackground — no significant exposure.Elevated indicates occupational exposure. Confirms exposure but does not diagnose chronic beryllium disease — BeLPT is needed for that. Investigate exposure source and review respiratory protection.

Frequently asked questions

Why is beryllium tested?

For occupational exposure assessment in aerospace, electronics, ceramics, dental alloy, and nuclear industries. Not a routine wellness test.

Does high beryllium mean I have lung disease?

No. High levels confirm exposure but not disease. Chronic beryllium disease is diagnosed by BeLPT + imaging + biopsy.

Is beryllium a carcinogen?

Yes — classified as a known human carcinogen (lung) by IARC and US NTP.

How is exposure controlled?

Engineering controls (enclosed machining, local exhaust ventilation), respiratory protection, hygiene measures (no smoking/eating at workstation), and medical surveillance.

Do I need fasting?

A 2-hour fast is sufficient.

How long does the report take?

Typically 5–7 days.
