What this test measures
Small tissue specimens collected by punch, pinch, core needle, or shave biopsy. Fixed in 10% formalin, processed, embedded, sectioned, H&E ± special stains / IHC, examined microscopically. Diagnoses cover inflammatory skin / GI conditions, breast / prostate / liver / kidney pathology, and many other organs.
Why it matters
Small biopsies are the backbone of dermatology, gastroenterology, and image-guided diagnostic biopsies in Indian practice. Outpatient, well-tolerated, fast turnaround. See HISTOPATH (SMALL) for full details.
How to prepare
Procedure-specific (skin punch — local anaesthetic; endoscopic — sedation; image-guided core — local). Disclose anticoagulation, allergies.
Markers & reference ranges
Reference ranges below are typical adult values. Your lab's reported range may differ slightly based on the assay platform and patient demographics — always read your report against the range printed on it.
| Marker | Normal range | If low | If high |
|---|---|---|---|
| Histopathology Diagnosis (Descriptive)[1] | Benign / Negative for malignancy | Benign — specific diagnosis (seborrhoeic keratosis, fibroadenoma, hyperplastic polyp, gastritis without H. pylori, etc.) guides routine management. | Inflammatory / dysplastic / malignant — diagnosis with specific entity, grade, any margin assessment (if relevant), and IHC results. |
Common small biopsy sources
| Source | Specimen size | Common indication |
|---|---|---|
| Skin punch | 3-6 mm | Suspicious mole / rash workup |
| Endoscopic GI | 2-5 mm | Gastritis, IBD, coeliac, polyp |
| Core breast | 14-18 gauge cores | BIRADS 4/5 imaging-detected lesion |
| Core prostate | 12-cores | Raised PSA workup |
| Core liver | 14-16 gauge | NASH, hepatitis staging |
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as Histopath (Small)?
Yes — same test under a different rate-card name. Diagnostic standards are identical.
How long for results?
Routine 3-7 days. Urgent or molecular cases longer.
Do I need to fast?
Depends on biopsy method. Skin punch no; endoscopic yes (6-8h); image-guided usually 4-6h fast.
Will I need a larger biopsy later?
Possibly — small samples may need follow-up excisional biopsy if diagnosis is unclear or if surgical clearance is needed.
