MUMPS ANTIBODY - IGG

Also known as: Mumps IgG · Mumps Immunity Test · Mumps Antibody Titre · MMR Vaccine Immunity (Mumps)

Sample: Serum Reference price: ₹600Code: ZNT-MUMPSANTIBODYIGG

What this test measures

Mumps IgG is a long-lived antibody produced after natural mumps infection or after MMR vaccination. The test measures these antibodies in serum and is used to confirm immunity to mumps — typically before employment in healthcare, in pre-pregnancy counselling, or when vaccination records are missing.

IgG develops within 2–4 weeks after infection or vaccination and generally remains detectable for life, though levels can wane over decades.

Why it matters

Mumps is part of the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine but is not included in India's Universal Immunisation Programme schedule — many Indian adults received only measles or measles-rubella vaccines, leaving a gap in mumps immunity that surfaces in outbreaks (school and college clusters, post-monsoon urban outbreaks). For complete immunity, two doses of mumps-containing vaccine are needed.

Confirming IgG immunity matters most in: healthcare workers (who can transmit mumps to vulnerable patients), young adults entering hostels or workplaces during local outbreaks, and women planning pregnancy (though mumps in pregnancy carries less fetal risk than measles or rubella, the MMR vaccine is still contraindicated during pregnancy itself).

How to prepare

No fasting required. Wait at least 4 weeks after any MMR vaccination before testing for IgG, so antibodies have time to develop fully.

Markers & reference ranges

Reference ranges below are typical adult values. Your lab's reported range may differ slightly based on the assay platform and patient demographics — always read your report against the range printed on it.

MarkerNormal rangeIf lowIf high
Mumps IgG (AU/mL or Index)[1][2]Positive (≥ assay cut-off) = immuneNon-immune. If you are a healthcare worker, planning pregnancy, or were exposed to a known case, your doctor may recommend an MMR booster.Immune — antibodies from past infection or vaccination are present. Re-infection is unlikely; no further action needed for routine screening.

Frequently asked questions

Why would my doctor order this test?

Common reasons are pre-employment screening for healthcare workers, pre-pregnancy planning, contact tracing in an outbreak, or clarifying immunity when vaccination records are not available.

Is mumps a serious illness?

Most cases are mild with fever and swollen parotid glands, but complications include orchitis (testicular inflammation, sometimes with fertility consequences in adults), oophoritis, pancreatitis, meningitis and rarely deafness. Adult infections tend to be more severe than childhood ones.

I had MMR as a child but my IgG is negative. What do I do?

Immunity from a single MMR dose can wane and a second dose may not have been received in older Indian birth cohorts. A booster MMR is safe and is often recommended if you are non-immune as an adult.

Are mumps outbreaks common in India?

Localised mumps outbreaks in schools, colleges and hostels are reported across Indian cities, including Mumbai. They tend to peak in winter and early monsoon months.

Can I take the MMR vaccine during pregnancy?

No. MMR is a live vaccine and is given before pregnancy (with a 1-month wait) or in the immediate postpartum period.

Does fasting affect the result?

No. You do not need to fast.

How long does the report take?

Typically 24 hours from sample collection in NABL-accredited Mumbai and Thane labs.
