What this test measures
Silver is not an essential element. Serum or whole-blood silver reflects ongoing absorption. Chronic exposure to silver (colloidal silver products, silver-impregnated dressings used on large wound surfaces, silver-coated implants, occupational exposure in jewellery / electronics / mirror manufacture) deposits in skin, mucous membranes, internal organs, and the cornea — producing argyria, a characteristic and irreversible blue-grey discolouration.
Why it matters
Indian dermatology clinics occasionally see argyria in people who have used colloidal silver supplements for years (marketed as immune-boosters or alternative therapies — no proven benefit, real harm). Other sources include patients with burns treated with silver sulphadiazine over large areas for prolonged periods. The cosmetic disfigurement is permanent — pigment cannot be removed. Other effects of chronic silver are minimal (silver is not particularly neuro- or hepatotoxic at usual exposures).
How to prepare
Trace-metal-free royal-blue-top tube. No fasting required. Disclose any silver-containing products: colloidal silver supplements (the commonest cause of high levels), silver-impregnated wound dressings, silver-coated indwelling catheters, occupational exposure.

Frequently asked questions
Is colloidal silver good for the immune system?
No. Colloidal silver has no proven health benefit and causes argyria, which is permanent. FDA, NIH, and Indian dermatology bodies do not recommend it.
Can argyria be reversed?
No. Once silver has deposited in skin and tissues, it remains for life. Laser treatments have shown limited benefit. Prevention is the only effective approach — stop using silver-containing supplements before deposition occurs.
Are silver wound dressings safe?
For limited use on infected wounds, yes — they prevent infection without significant systemic absorption. Prolonged use over large surface areas (extensive burns, chronic wounds) can raise serum silver and warrants monitoring.
Does silver jewellery raise blood silver?
No. Solid silver jewellery in normal use causes negligible absorption.
What about silver in water purifiers?
Silver-impregnated filter media release tiny amounts of silver as a biocide. Trace dietary intake is well below toxic levels.
