URINE PREGNANCY RAPID TEST

Also known as: UPT · Urine hCG · Pregnancy Test Strip · Urine Pregnancy Test · Qualitative hCG Urine

Sample: Urine Reference price: ₹200Code: ZNT-URINEPREGNANCYRAPIDTEST

What this test measures

A urine pregnancy rapid test detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) — a hormone produced by the developing placenta from about 6–8 days after fertilisation. A small urine sample is added to a lateral-flow immunoassay strip; if hCG is present above the test threshold (usually 20–25 mIU/mL), a coloured line appears in the test window. A second line (control) confirms the strip is working.

The result is qualitative — positive or negative — and is read within 3–5 minutes. The test does not give an exact hCG number; for that, a serum quantitative beta-hCG is needed.

Why it matters

A urine pregnancy test is the first step in confirming a suspected pregnancy and is widely used in clinics, pharmacies and at home across India. Early detection allows timely antenatal booking, folic acid supplementation, lifestyle advice, and decisions about medications that may not be safe in pregnancy. It is also routinely used as a screen before X-rays / CT scans, before surgery and anaesthesia in women of reproductive age, and in any abdominal-pain workup that could include ectopic pregnancy.

Because it is cheap, quick and reliable from about the date of a missed period, it remains the workhorse pregnancy test in Indian outpatient practice. A serum beta-hCG is reserved for early or ambiguous cases.

How to prepare

No fasting required. First-morning urine is preferred — it is the most concentrated and gives the highest sensitivity. Collect a mid-stream sample in a clean dry container. Avoid drinking excessive fluid before the test, as dilute urine can give a false-negative. If the test is being done very early (before a missed period), repeat in 2–3 days if negative.

Markers & reference ranges

Reference ranges below are typical adult values. Your lab's reported range may differ slightly based on the assay platform and patient demographics — always read your report against the range printed on it.

MarkerNormal rangeIf lowIf high
Urine hCG (Qualitative) ()[1][2]Negative (not pregnant)Negative — no detectable hCG. Most often: not pregnant, OR pregnancy too early (hCG below the test threshold), OR diluted sample. Repeat in 2–3 days if pregnancy still suspected, or do a serum beta-hCG for confirmation.Positive — pregnancy is the most likely explanation. False-positive causes are uncommon: certain ovarian or trophoblastic tumours, recent miscarriage, or recent hCG-containing fertility injections.

Frequently asked questions

When is the earliest I can do a urine pregnancy test?

Most home and lab UPT strips detect pregnancy from the day of a missed period (about 2 weeks after ovulation / fertilisation). Done earlier, the hCG level may be below the detection threshold and give a false-negative. If still suspecting pregnancy after a negative test, repeat in 2–3 days or do a serum beta-hCG.

Do I need to use first-morning urine?

First-morning urine is preferred because it is most concentrated and has the highest hCG level. Later in the day, dilute urine can give a false-negative — especially very early in pregnancy.

Can the test be wrong?

False-negatives are more common than false-positives — usually from testing too early or diluted urine. False-positives are rare and can be caused by ovarian / trophoblastic tumours, recent miscarriage, or recent hCG fertility injections.

I had a negative urine test but my period is still late — what should I do?

Repeat the test in 2–3 days with first-morning urine. If still negative but period has not arrived, do a serum beta-hCG, which is more sensitive. Other causes of late period — stress, weight change, thyroid problems, PCOS — should be considered.

How do I know how far along I am?

The urine test is qualitative — it does not give a quantitative number to estimate gestation. Dating is usually done by last menstrual period (LMP), confirmed by ultrasound.

Can I do this test at home?

Yes — UPT strips are widely available at Indian pharmacies. Lab UPTs are similar but with verified strip quality and documented reporting, useful for medico-legal or pre-procedure clearance.

How long does the report take?

A lab UPT is reported within 1 hour. At-home strips read in 3–5 minutes.
