What this test measures
Vanadium testing by ICP-MS quantifies vanadium concentration in serum, whole blood or urine. Vanadium is widely used in steel alloys, vanadium pentoxide catalysts, fuel oil combustion (residual oil from refineries), and ceramics. Industrial workers exposed to vanadium dusts or fumes can absorb it through inhalation; toxicity manifests mainly as respiratory irritation, green tongue, conjunctivitis and metallic taste.
Trace-element-free royal blue-top tubes are required to avoid contamination. Urine is a better matrix than blood for recent exposure since vanadium clears rapidly.
Why it matters
Vanadium exposure is mostly occupational — boiler cleaners (residual oil ash contains very high vanadium), steel and ferroalloy plant workers, vanadium pentoxide catalyst manufacturing, petroleum refining, and ceramics. India has substantial steel and petroleum sectors where vanadium exposure can occur if dust control is inadequate. Testing is appropriate for occupational health surveillance of workers in these industries, and for evaluating symptoms (chronic cough, wheeze, conjunctivitis, "green tongue") in exposed workers.
Vanadium is NOT a routinely needed wellness or "nutritional" test. Some supplements promote vanadyl sulphate for blood-sugar effects with weak evidence — testing without an occupational reason has limited value.
How to prepare
Stop multivitamins and any vanadium supplements (vanadyl sulphate) for at least 72 hours. Avoid contamination from steel surfaces during collection. Trace-element-free royal blue-top tube must be used. If occupational testing — sample at end of shift / end of workweek per OSHA/ACOEM biological monitoring protocols.
Markers & reference ranges
Reference ranges below are typical adult values. Your lab's reported range may differ slightly based on the assay platform and patient demographics — always read your report against the range printed on it.
| Marker | Normal range | If low | If high |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanadium (µg/L)[1][2] | Whole blood: < 1 µg/L · Urine: < 1 µg/g creatinine | Background — no significant exposure. | Elevated levels indicate occupational exposure (boiler cleaning, steel, petroleum, catalyst manufacture). Symptoms can include respiratory irritation, green tongue, metallic taste. Investigate source and review workplace controls. |
Vanadium exposure sources in India
| Source | Risk level | Worker group |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler cleaning (oil-fired) | Very high | Maintenance workers |
| Steel and ferroalloy plants | Moderate-high | Smelter, furnace workers |
| Petroleum refining | Moderate | Catalyst handlers |
| Ceramics, glass manufacturing | Low-moderate | Production workers |
| General population (diet/air) | Negligible | Background only |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fast?
A 2-hour fast is sufficient. Stop supplements 72 hours before.
Why is vanadium tested?
Almost always for occupational exposure assessment — boiler cleaning, steel, petroleum refining. It is not a useful nutritional or wellness test.
My level is high — what next?
Identify the exposure source (workplace), review respiratory protection and engineering controls, and follow up with serial measurement after exposure reduction.
Is vanadium a needed nutrient?
Vanadium is considered a possibly essential ultra-trace element but no human deficiency syndrome is recognised. There is no RDA.
Are vanadium supplements safe?
Limited evidence and possible toxicity at high doses. Not recommended unless prescribed for a specific reason.
How long does the report take?
Typically 5–7 days (specialised ICP-MS).
